What is plywood?

Plywood is an engineered wood panel made by gluing thin veneer layers (plies) together with their grain alternating at 90 degrees. Sheets typically run 3, 5, or more plies — more plies generally means a stronger, flatter, more stable panel.

The 7 main types of plywood

1. Softwood plywood

Made from pine, fir, spruce, or cedar. The workhorse of construction — framing, subflooring, roof and wall sheathing. Affordable, easy to handle, and strong enough for structural work where it won’t be seen.

2. Hardwood plywood

Made with hardwood veneers like oak, maple, birch, or cherry. This is the go-to for anything visible and finished — fine furniture, cabinetry, trim, and paneling. Superior surface, strength, and appearance; it takes stain and paint cleanly.

3. Marine plywood

Built with waterproof glue and void-free construction for permanent moisture exposure — boat building, docks, and outdoor structures. Not the same as “pressure-treated”; marine ply is about a flawless, fully-waterproof bond with no internal voids where water could sit.

4. Fire-retardant plywood

Chemically treated to slow flame spread. Common in commercial buildings, ceilings, and wall panels where fire code demands it — hospitals, schools, and public spaces.

5. Structural plywood

Load-bearing, thicker, and stamped with a span rating. Used for subfloors, roof decks, and shear walls — anywhere the panel is doing structural work. This is where a contractor pays attention to the APA stamp, not just the look.

6. Decorative / veneer plywood

A hardwood or figured veneer bonded to a stable core, chosen for looks — wall panels, doors, and furniture faces. Gives a high-end wood appearance for less than solid hardwood.

7. OSB (oriented strand board)

Technically not plywood, but the sheet you’ll see next to it: compressed wood strands bonded into a panel. Cost-effective and strong for subflooring and wall sheathing, though it handles moisture poorly if left exposed.

Plywood grades (A, B, C, D) explained

Every sheet carries a grade for its face and back veneer, and it’s the single most useful thing to understand when buying. The letters describe surface quality:

Which plywood is best for kitchen cabinets?

For quality cabinet boxes, the standard is 3/4″ hardwood plywood — usually maple or birch — with a veneer core (not an MDF core). Veneer core holds screws better for hinges and shelf pins, resists sag on wide spans, and weighs less than MDF. Cabinet backs are often 1/4″ birch ply. For a painted finish, a birch face takes paint beautifully; for stained cabinets, maple or oak shows the grain.
